www.oakwoodregister.com Vol. 21, No. 35 August 29, 2012 5th annual OHS Athletic Hall of Fame inducts twelve It was a "full house" as fam- ily, friends, fellow classmates and well-wishers inducted the fifth class of the Oakwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame at the Dayton Country Club on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012. Following are the OHS Hall of Fame inductees for 2012: Virginia Hollinger McCloud, Class of 1936 Presenter: Jim Whalen Virginia Hollinger was a member of the Oakwood Girls Tennis Team 1933-34-35-36; Athletic Hall of Famer Bess Hayner was her Coach. Virginia was a two-time holder of the US National Indoor Girls Tennis Championship while attending Oakwood. In 1947, to honor the Oakwood High School student & National Champion, The Virginia Hollinger Memorial Tennis Club was founded & constructed on Shafor Blvd. in Oakwood & dedi- cated on July 4, 1950. Virginia attended Rollins College & in 1938 became Women's National Indoor Champion. Her daughter, Holly Lindley of California, will be accepting the award posthu- mously on her behalf. Nick Warring, Class of 1957 Presenter: Judy Comisar Nick Warring was an outstand- ing all-around athlete from 1954- 1957. He earned 12 Varsity let- ters: tennis-4, football-3, track-3, & basketball-2. In football he was named 1st team All League his junior year for defense & again received 1st team All League hon- ors his senior year for offense. The 1954 season was Oakwood's 1st year in the SWBL & with a 5-2-0 League record they placed 3rd in the 8-team conference. That was Warring's sophomore year & his 49 points scored ranked near the top of the SWBL point pro- ducers. A highlight of his junior year was the Eaton game in which he intercepted 5 passes & scored twice. There were also numerous long kick off & punt returns by Warring during his 1955 & 1956 seasons. His senior season includ- ed a brilliant game winning 45 yd. touchdown run in the final seconds of the West Milton game. Nick played guard on Varsity Basketball team his sophomore, junior & senior years; was a leading scorer in many games, as well as All- League his senior year. Nick played Varsity Tennis under Athletic Hall of Famer Coach Mack Hummon where he was state qualifier in doubles for 3 years. Nick was also on the Varsity Track team for 3 years; his events were broad jump, high jump & sprints. Nick cur- rently resides in Centerville, Ohio. Lissa Priest Fickert, Class of 1971, Coach Presenter: Howard Sales As an Oakwood High School athlete, she lettered in field hock- ey, basketball, volleyball, softball, & track. In field hockey she was a 2 year letter winner, Captain, & received the Best Defense Award her junior year. As a senior she received the Bess Hayner Award, an award given to the senior girl on the Field hockey Team deemed by her coach to best exemplify leadership, integrity, sportsman- ship & a sense of fair play, the qualities that Bess expected most from her players. In volleyball she was a 2 year letter winner; bas- ketball a 2 year letter winner & received the Best Defense & Best Playmaker as a senior; a 3 year letter recipient in softball & named Most Valuable her sophomore & senior years; 2 year letter winner in track & golf. Lissa was Varsity Field Hockey Coach from 1985- 2000, & 2002.
