Th e real stars of the show seemed to be LVT on the product side as well as the continued strength of the emerging Chinese market. Haines annual Loyalty Club Summit meeting held here at the Hyatt Regency April 2-3. While the key messages were the importance of education, changes in technology and new product launches, the underlying message, as it has always been, was strengthening Haines' relationships with its retailers and off ering tools to grow their businesses. Th e annual gathering, designed Continued on page 29 Coverings 2012 23 NWFA's Martin one year in M Michael Martin ichael Martin was named executive director and CEO of the NWFA last year replacing long-time leader Ed Korczak. In the April 18/25 issue of FCW, Martin talked about taking the lead with technology — the orga- nization now has a presence on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as well as a robust website, magazine and blog. He's also had to shepherd the industry through an International Trade Commis- sion hearing and the back-end of a deep recession. Th is year's convention, he said, will tackle tough issues such as lumber supply, sustainability and international trends. Here, Martin details other insights and challenges he has seen in his fi rst year of leadership. What have you learned about this industry that surprised you? Martin: Even though wood fl ooring is a $1.8 billion dollar industry, I'm surprised that it is such a small, close-knit community. When I look at how our members come together to educate one another, when I see how our industry continues to support our Expo, when I hear about how our members work together to complete challenging installation projects oſt en thousands of miles from their own home offi ces, I realize that they are more like family than competitors. Th ey work together to better the industry as a whole. We've seen this with individuals, as well as organizations. Th is year, at our Expo for example, we'll bring together industry lead- ers from numerous har dwood organizations to provide updates on a wide variety of issues aff ecting our industry. To my knowledge, it's the fi rst time all these diff erent organizations have been together on one stage for such a selfl ess purpose. What have you identified as the greatest challenges for the hardwood industry? Martin: Th e down economy continues to be our biggest challenge. For three or so years now, our members have struggled with reduced sales and have had to make some tough decisions to remain in busi- ness. NWFA experienced this as well when we restructured our staff this past June and eliminated seven positions. Th ese decisions aren't easy, but are necessary to remain com- petitive and vital. What's promising is that for the fi rst time during the recession, we're starting to hear positive things from our members — one installer is booked solid for Continued on page 17 Industry honors Chris Davis For breaking news updated each business day, visit us online at www.fcw1.com [Anaheim, Calif.] Th e World Floor Cover- ing Association said farewell to its CEO, Chris Davis, on March 29, during a tribute event held at the Sheraton Park Hotel. Th e event, which included members of Davis' family as well as board members, associate members, friends, former co-workers and industry members, honored and celebrated Davis' life. Davis, who was also the head of the Floor Covering Industry Foundation (FCIF), passed away suddenly February 22, aſt er a brief illness. Davis was also the chairman of the board of directors for the Floor Covering Business to Business (FCB2B). Jim Walters, current chairman of the WFCA, welcomed the industry and extended a special welcome to Davis' family for coming. "It's truly our honor. On behalf of the WFCA, board of directors, past chair- man and staff , we welcome you. Tonight we do not mourn. Tonight we honor Chris and everything he meant to the WFCA. It's a night to celebrate.
