TLU TODAY Grants & Alumni Participation Your gift, regardless of size, makes a difference! Spotlight: Budwine Charitable Foundation Grant Since 1999, the W.J. and Lela Budwine Charitable Foundation has faithfully supported the mission of TLU in preparing students for a life of service in their chosen career. The foundation has given over $255,000 for pre-professional scholarships in the sciences in honor of Dr. Earl Beard. Dr. Beard, who received an honorary doctorate from TLU, is a former professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, and Chief of Cardiology at Kelsey Seybold Clinic in Houston. Aſter the death of W.J. and Lela, their son, Wayne, took the reins of the foundation which is now headquartered in Rio Rancho near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Wayne and his wife Wanda are active in outreach and ministry through their church in retirement, and most notably, the Young at Heart Choir. The scholarships and grants are given to students seeking careers in the medical professions and have supported high level summer research experiences for many years. Most recently, in honor of the original intent of the foundation and in conjunction with the passion of Wayne, students have received funding to conduct medical missionary work in Honduras. This study abroad project allows students to do research, practice their skills and connect with the Honduran culture. Mary Rosengrant, senior biology major, says the experience opened her eyes to something new about the world, people, animals and medicine. "For me, the trip to Honduras was an immensely rewarding adventure with real-life exposure to foreign culture, intercultural communication, the importance of health education and animal medicine, and life outside of the United States. Nothing beats an experience like that." The Budwine Charitable Foundation has made an impact on the educational experience at TLU and continues its work in the world as numerous students who have benefited from these giſts are now practicing physicians, medical researchers and educators in the field of medicine.
