Holder has been appointed dean of the USC Leventhal School of Accounting, effective July 1. He replaced Dean Randolph Beatty,who stepped down at the end of June. An expert on financial reporting and auditing, Holder came to USC fromTexas Tech University in 1979 andwas named to the Accounting Circle Professorship in Accounting in 1988. Since 1990, he has held the Ernst and Young Professorship in Accounting and has directed the USC SEC and Financial Reporting Institute since 1994. Holder called it “a terrific honor” to be selected as the next dean. “I viewthis position as one that involves being a steward of a great school,” he said. “My job is to preserve and to protect and to advance.” USC Leventhal, a unit of the USCMarshall School of Business, offers undergradu- ate andmaster’s programs in accounting,widely recognized in the top tier of accounting educationworldwide. The USC Leventhal undergraduate programis ranked No. 6 by U.S. News & World Report and No. 7 by Public Accounting Report,while theMaster of Business Taxation programis ranked No. 4 in the nation by Public Accounting Report. The school also ranks No. 7 in accounting research productionworldwide, according to the latest University of Texas at Dallas’ Top 100 Business School Research Rankings. see Holder New Dean, page 14 Phil Holthouse, 2011 USC Leventhal Commencement Speaker Phil Holthouse, co-founding partner of Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt, was the USC Leventhal commencement speaker this year. The ceremony was held on Friday, May 13 in Alumni Park. Phil began his career with Peat Marwick & Mitchell (KPMG) in Los Angeles and worked as a tax manager in Peat Marwick’s national tax practice inWashington, D.C., where he monitored tax changes for the firm's affiliate offices. Phil co-founded Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt LLP in 1991. A summa cum laude graduate, Phil holds a master's degree in business taxation and a bachelor's degree in business administration – both from the University of Southern Cali- fornia – and a law degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. He served as a part-time faculty member for USC's Graduate Taxation Program for approximately 10 years and is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Leventhal School of Accounting at USC and the Graduate Tax Program at Loyola Law School. Other professional affiliations in- clude the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Ameri- can Bar Association, and the State Bar of California. Phil also serves on the boards of Ascent Media Corp. (NASDAQ) and several non-profit organizations including The Curtis School, Harvard-Westlake School and Young Presidents’ Organization – Los Angeles Chapter.
