Entertainment School of Rock ‘Youngsters’ graduate to spotlights of local stages S ome people live their whole life trying to  gure out what they are meant to do. Matthew Davidson  gured it out at the age of 3 when he received his  rst toy guitar. Now 13 years old, Matthew is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Matthew Davidson Band, which will perform live at 7 p.m. April 9 at the Holiday in Dixie festival. “I’m so blessed with all the opportunities I’ve had to perform,” Matthew said. His career has rapidly accelerated, thrusting him and his band into the spotlight, since their debut performance in June 2010 at the Madison Park El Chico’s in Shreveport. Ella Davidson, Matthew’s mother, is his No. 1 fan. “I hope Matthew always enjoys music as much as he does now and that he has a long and successful career,” she said. She says one of her proudest moments as a mother was watching Matthew perform at the 2010 Red River Revel. “I’ve always loved the Revel, and for my son to be performing on the main stage on opening day was incredible,” Davidson said. The Matthew Davidson Band provides a musically good time for family friendly venues, festivals, weddings, reunions and private parties and offers a lengthy song list including hits by Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Elvis Presley and many more. Matthew, who won an electric guitar in the 2007 James Burton Guitar Showdown, was one of eight student guitarists selected to play with Kenny Wayne Shepherd at his 2009 Artbreak concert. His band has since played at the 2010 Red River Dragonboat Festival, the Run for the Nuns biker rally at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs, the Monster Nation Pit Party at CenturyTel Center, the Minden Mardi Gras Festival, the Krewe of Centaur Parade and the Dallas House of Blues, to name a few. Fourteen-year-old Greg Clifford has been playing drums since he was 2 and taking lessons since he was 4. He has won several awards at regional competitions from his involvement in the advanced band at Caddo Middle Magnet. He is most looking forward to the crowds guaranteed to be at the Holiday in Dixie festival. “That’s when I play my best,” Greg said. “I get a lot of energy from the crowd.” Matthew couldn’t agree more. “My favorite part about playing for live audiences is the thrill and the adrenaline rush,” he said. “When you get up on stage and give it all you’ve got and people yell, clap and dance, there isn’t a feeling in the world like it.” Bruce Flett is the band’s bassist and second lead vocalist. He helped book their  rst gig and brings 35 years of professional experience to the stage. Flett recently received the honor of being inducted into Music Matters: The Matthew Davidson Band, comprised of 13-year-old singer/guitarist Matthew Davidson, 14-year-old drummer Greg Clifford and local legend Bruce Flett, will perform at the Holiday in Dixie festival. the NXNW Louisiana Music Museum. Despite their range in age, the band members get along great together as a team. “We have really good communication on stage,” Greg said. “We improvise together and bring new ideas to the songs.” “The best part for me about being in the Matthew Davidson Band is it keeps me young at heart,” Flett said. “Matthew and Greg are outstanding young people and musicians that keep me on my toes.” As for Matthew, in the next  ve years he hopes to see himself recording a CD, doing some touring and — of course — graduating high school.
