Additionally, the undergraduate students would create a procedures manual for the ATS general ledger accounting system. The student team was led by Cacherelle Bolden, a senior majoring in accounting at USC Leventhal, who has experience working with GP 10 software. In this capacity, she was in frequent contact with MacRae. Cacherelle prepared inventory and bank reconciliation procedures, as well as overall business processes flowcharts. Ben Billings, a junior accounting major, also has experience working with GP 10 software, and documented the purchase order procedures. The other four team members were: Alberta Traffic Supply's Brian Truong, Tyler MacRae and Ken Rawson, with Profs. Zivia Sweeney and Ces Jackson Professor Zivia Sweeney of the USC Leventhal School of Accounting teamed up with several of her top students this past summer to embark on an accounting-based project for a private Canadian company, Alberta Traffic Supply Ltd. (ATS). ATS is western Canada's premier traffic control company, which manufactures various types of traffic control equipment and signage. Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, ATS serves a wide variety of industries, including the government, construction companies, highway maintenance contractors, emergency services, and other entities that require trafficcontrol. ATS, reporting under Canadian private enterprise generally-accepted accounting principles, has currently been in the process of a major conversion of its general ledger legacy system to Microsoft's Dynamic GP 10. The conversion has been complicated because of difficulties encountered with the structural set-up and the limitations related to data transfer between the two systems. After months of discussion with the Assistant Chief Financial Officer Tyler MacRae, Professor Sweeney decided to assemble a student team to assist the company with the project. She viewed this as an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to have hands-on experience working with the financial system and understanding procedures of an international corporation. FALL 2012 / WINTER 2013 Professor Sweeney is a veteran when it comes to complicated, and sometimes problematic, systems conversions. With her business insights, she saw this project as a way for her students to gain invaluable experience working on a real-world project Nick Bessette, a sophomore majoring in accounting and business, drafted accounts receivable and sales order procedures; Quentin Hsu, a sophomore majoring in accounting with a minor in computer science, prepared the accounts payable procedures and performed the project quality review audit; see Canadian, page 7 Board of Advisors Meeting USC Leventhal's Board of Advisors Meeting was held November 2 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Topics of discussion included changes in curriculum, development/fundraising, and the strategic direction of the school. Dean Bill Holder co-moderated the event with Dennis Frankeberger, Board of Advisors chair. Professor Bob Trezevant, chair of Leventhal's Curriculum Committee, gave an overview of the changes in the BSA, MAcc, and MBT programs, while Professors Kenneth Merchant and Tom Ryan presented descriptions of their respective ethics and fair value accounting courses. Associate Dean of Masters Programs, Shirley Maxey, and Professor Patricia Mills discussed an online Advanced Partnerships course and touched on other distance learning opportunities (click here) that may be offered to students in the near future. The morning's portion of the meeting ended with group discussions of how various aspects of accounting programs, organizations, and technology will be affected by the 150-hour legislation.
