TOP JOB ��� Grand-Prize Winner By Emily Howard his TOP JOB grand-prize winner, Hester Painting and Decorating, had a tough job that required strict time and money management. They were required to prep multiple surfaces, including metal, concrete and drywall, and then create a broad array of finishes from the simple to the complex. The jobsite came in at a staggering 120,000 square feet enveloped in five stories of steel, and they had only six months. Not only that, but the building also was applying for LEED Platinum certification, which meant product research and selection were rigorous. This project is a testament to how broad knowledge can be very lucrative. Hester Painting and Decorating was one of many contractors to bid on this project, and they did not come in with the lowest estimate. In order to secure the bid, they took a consultative approach. The project manager demonstrated vast knowledge of the many materials required for the job. Using the PDCA Standard P5 ��� Benchmark Samples ��� they confirmed the acceptable level of preparation for each substrate. One area of particular importance and difficulty was the architectural exposed steel that was to receive a silver metallic finish. Several inplace mock-ups were created to demonstrate the crew���s ability to achieve the desired result. Having proved ability and knowledge, they won the job. Once on the job, Hester Painting and Decorating worked in conjunction with multiple different trades, which comes with its own set of obstacles. The first obstacle was the deadline. If another trade was delayed, Hester���s crew would have to make up that time. Since there was a grand opening already planned, there was no wiggle room on the completion date. Hester ran crews of up to 10 painters and often worked on weekends in order to complete the project on time. The second obstacle was one of field quality control. With other trades working all around, they used zip poles and containment systems to isolate themselves from the other trades. Careful jobsite preparation ensured that all other work areas and equipment were properly protected. T With a crew of 10 and working multiple weekends, Hester Painting and Decorating was able to finish the job on time, even as they worked around multiple different trades. ��� Hester Painting and Decorating won the job through successful sales, not price. ��� Before prep work could start in any area, extensive protection had to be installed over brick, walls, ceiling windows, the lobby security desk and other work zones.
